
Dr. Kenneth Wyne Mutuma
DR. KENNETH WYNE MUTUMA is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and has been in practice for the last 23 years, having been admitted to the bar in 1999. He is a Managing Partner at the firm of Kihara & Wyne Advocates. Dr. Kenneth holds several academic qualifications including a Doctorate and Masters in Law from the University of Cape Town as well as a law undergraduate degree from the University of Liverpool. He is also a qualified Architect having graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Nairobi. His practice spans a wide range of areas including commercial law, commercial arbitration, construction adjudication, mediation, litigation, conveyancing, corporate governance, refugee law, human rights law and employment law.
Dr. Kenneth is also a Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London), a Certified Professional Mediator, a Certified Secretary and a Certified Governance Auditor. He is an active member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya), the Law Society of Kenya, the East African Law Society, the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC), the Dispute Resolution Panel of the Architectural Association of Kenya, the Institute of Certified Secretaries and the International Commission of Jurists. He has a comprehensive understanding of ADR procedures having acted as arbitrator and adjudicator in a wide range of commercial and construction disputes.
Dr. Kenneth possesses accumulated experience and academic leadership in the area of international law, ADR and corporate governance. He is currently a Senior Lecturer of Law at the University of Nairobi, where he teaches, inter alia, public international law, international relations, human rights law, international humanitarian law, and ADR at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. He has published extensively in these subjects both locally and internationally in the form of books, book chapters and peer reviewed journals. He has authored several volumes on International Law and ADR including: IHL: Themes from Africa, Belonging: Reflections on the Refugee Situation in East Africa; Mediation Practice in Kenya; Innovations and Disruptions in ADR; and The State of ADR Practice in Kenya. In addition, he has undertaken several consultancies across the continent on international law and ADR including assignments for IOM, UNHCR, ICRC as well as the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Kenya Branch) and is the editor-in-chief of the Eastern Africa Journal on International Humanitarian Law (EAJIHL).
Dr. Kenneth has extensive senior management experience across local and international settings as well as practical knowledge of interdisciplinary issues. He has and continues to serve as legal advisor to a range of international governments and corporate entities working to address various developmental challenges. Part of his accomplishments relate to the role he played as a regional legal advisor for the International Committee of the Red Cross, his role as legal officer at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), his engagements with the South African National Assembly as a legal coordinator and his work implementing a national capacity development programme on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He is a member of the National Committee on Implementation of IHL in Kenya and is currently a part of a team attached to the State Corporations Advisory Committee, working to strengthen the capacity of national state corporation boards. Dr. Kenneth has previously served as Chair of the Independent Elections Panel of Cricket Kenya, as an ad hoc member of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal and currently serves as a Member of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Appeals Committee.
